Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our listeners to some deserving up and coming artists/ bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass and we hope you do too! Today, we’d like to shine the spotlight on Melanie McGuirk!
Melanie McGuirk is a pop/r&b singer originally from Maine and currently living in LA. Whether it is playing gigs in her hometown, performing at the infamous Whisky A Go Go or NAMM, she captivates audiences with her surprisingly soulful tone.
Some people know it’s when they hear a classic album or see someone perform. Do you know when you were bitten by the music bug and knew this was your path?
When I was 5 years old I knew I wanted to do music! My mom is a singer so I got into music because of her. Apparently I begged my parents for piano lessons but since I was so young and they didn’t think I’d stick with it they made a deal with me. If I played piano everyday for 6 months I could take lessons. I passed their test so I started lessons and began singing shortly after.
What was your first recording experience like?
My first recording experience was when I was about 11 or 12 I think. It was at my mom’s friend’s studio. He had a free recording event for his opening day. I got to record a few songs and I remember it super clearly. It was a pretty cool studio and a fun experience! I ended up recording there a few times as I got older.
Does anyone else in your family have the music gene?
Both of my parents have the music gene. My mom was in a band in her late teens/early twenties called Hot Fudge. She’s also been in choirs and done musical theater her whole life. My dad has always played guitar and even recently bought recording equipment so he can write and record some music.
Growing up, we’re the you the class clown or the ham wanting to the the center of attention? Maybe you were the shy introvert?
Growing up I definitely didn’t want to be the center of attention in most cases. I wasn’t a class clown at all and I floated between friend groups. I did enjoy performing but I’ve always been a fairly shy performer so I can’t really say I love having all the attention on me.
If you could pick any musician (dead or alive) to sit down with and have a drink and chat, who would it be?
If I could have a drink and chat with any musician it would probably be Jessie J. She’s had a really huge career, with most of it being songwriting. I’ve admired her since I was young and I still do.
