Rock band Blacktop Mojo released their new album Pollen on April 5, a follow-up to 2021’s self-titled album. The Texas-based band was formed in 2012 by singer Matt James and drummer Nathan Gillis. Their signature sound known as “Texas Grunge” blends the best of southern rock, blues, and grunge rock.
The opening track, “The End Is Gonna Come,” sets the high-energy tone of the album with hard-hitting lyrics as James’ gritty, powerful vocals sing, “I’m fighting for my life. Collapse, collapse, collapse, and die.”
“I Can’t Tell,” begins with acoustic guitar and quickly builds into a rowdy, powerful rock song. Singer Matt James says this track is “about dating in the modern age. Commitment is a hard thing to come by and only getting scarcer. It’s hard to trust anyone, especially yourself.”
A stand-out on the album, “Red Enough” has a soaring, catchy chorus and highlights the band’s genius songwriting skills. James’ passionate vocals on the chorus belts “If I could paint this town red enough. I won’t know you’re gone, and I can still taste you on my tongue ‘til the liquor leaves my blood.” The 90’s rock vibe will be a hit with fans.
Pollen is a refreshing rock record. Blacktop Mojo’s compelling songwriting takes you on an exhilarating musical journey. The band’s distinct, unique sound makes this an album that will captivate rock fans and have them rockin’ out proudly.
