What happens when The King of Horror crosses paths with one of the most influential punk bands of all time? Well, if you’re lucky the product of that occurrence is a song to use in one of your biggest films. If you haven’t figured it out yet you must have been living under a rock. The King of Horror is Stephen King, the band is The Ramones and the song is their classic “Pet Sematary.” The song was the theme song (used in the closing credits) for King’s 1989 classic horror movie and it’s the perfect song to do a cover of at Halloween.
Enter Maryland hard rockers Veer. The band decided to dust off the Ramones classic and cover it for Halloween. They could have done an exact note for note cover, but where’s the challenge in that? They could have tried a new arrangement for the song, but why mess up a classic like that? Instead, they took one part The Ramones, added one part Veer and BOOM! What you have is an updated version of The Ramones classic that sounds more like 2024 than it does 1989 (when it was originally recorded). It remains true to the original but it has Veer’s thumbprints all throughout. It also includes a tasty guitar solo in it that you definitely won’t find in any Ramones song. I’ve had the song on repeat for over 30 minutes, cranked up loud and I can’t get enough of it.
Veer is an amazing band when it comes to their merchandise and they have done it yet again for this release. The song comes out on 10/30 and they have a collectible package that includes a 7” vinyl, a “Pet Sematary” cd, a die-cut zombie hand sticker, an autographed flat and trading card #5 in their collectible set. I was going to say that Veer did a killer job on the song, but that may not be the best choice of words given the nature of the song.
