Music, by nature, is one of those things that if it doesn’t progress, it dies — that’s especially true for rock music — and on Saturday night at the Underground in Charlotte, N.C., Sueco took the stage for a performance that highlighted the progress that rock music has made in the 21st Century. Blending genres and embracing the rockstar lifestyle, it was a show to remember. The show was the last stop of the Attempted Lover Tour — named after his recently-released album of the same name. 

You never would have known the band was wrapping up a tour based on the raw energy of the band, and in particular, Sueco himself — who had me exhausted by the end of the first song just trying to keep up with him. With just one opener, Suicidal Idol, Sueco had plenty of time to shred through a huge setlist with some of his biggest hits, and newer songs that will no doubt make it to the top of the Spotify playlists of fans. 

I try to avoid labeling musicians by genre because, once again, progress means what I consider to be rock music, might not be what my dad does. With that said, for those who have not had a chance to listen to his music or want to know what he’s all about, I would say first and foremost Sueco is a rock musician. If you asked someone else they might say he is a hip hop artist who uses elements of rock or vice versa — it would all be accurate. Maybe you’d call the music ’emo-rap’ like his Wikipedia page labels him — but at the end of the day it’s still rock and roll to me.
