Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our readers to some deserving up and coming artists/bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass, and we hope you do too! Today we’d like to shine the spotlight on post-punkers The Haptics!

The Haptics are Cam (Guitar), Jin (Vocals), Mike (Bass) and Alexis (Drums) are The Haptics. Based in Vancouver, B.C., the band plays dark, melodic post-punk music. Jin grew up in Seattle worshipping bands like Garbage, Alice in Chains and Nirvana. She also loves minimal wave, post-punk and techno. She wishes she could take her bathroom acoustics on the road. Cam was born in Vancouver but never really managed to grow up. He loves cuddling his dog and his guitar but never at the same time. They just don’t get along.

We sat down with Jin from The Haptics for a short, but fun Q&A session!

Every superhero or villain has an origin, and a band is no different minus the radioactive william gibson, montreal, canada, haptic reconnaissance, spiders and secret government experiments. What is the origin of The Haptics?

Jin/The Haptics: I started writing music when I was living in Seoul, South Korea. In the years prior, I’d been working in film doing props and art direction. I decided to take a year in Korea teaching English. Doing so, I felt really creatively stifled from working outside of art. I sat down at a piano one day and started writing my own stuff.

Band names can have a meaning or it can be a name pulled out of a hat. What’s the story behind The Haptics?

I was reading a William Gibson book where he references the term “haptic  reconnaissance”. I really liked those words and we decided that “haptic” was a good  foundation for our band name.

What are you currently working on?

We released our single, “Biodome” in early December. We released our latest single “Ghost” on January 10th.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Believe it or not my first celebrity crush was Luigi from Super Mario Brothers. I used to play Super MarioWorld on Super Nintendo and I thought Luigi was so cute.

We love cereal, especially at night. For some odd reason, it seems to taste better then.  Do you have a favorite cereal?

My favorite cereal was Lucky Charms growing up. Sometimes I eat just the  marshmallows and call it a day.

If you have any tattoos, what was your very first one and does it have any meaning  behind it?

My first tattoo was “ZHEN,” a Chinese character and my middle name. I also got a star underneath it which is pretty cheesy but hey, I was a teenager.

If you’re into comics, who is your favorite superhero and why?

I’ve always liked Rogue from the X-Men. She’s pretty sick.
