This year, George Clinton turns 85, marking more than half a century as one of the most consequential architects of modern sound. As the visionary force behind Parliament-Funkadelic, Clinton didn’t just define a genre, he built a musical universe that continues to shape generations of artists across hip-hop, rock, and beyond.

From Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg who transformed P-Funk into the foundation of West Coast G-funk to Outkast, who have described themselves as “children of the P-Funk era,” Clinton’s influence is both direct and enduring. Artists spanning Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Flea, Angelo Moore, and Prince have credited his work as foundational, not just sonically, but culturally.

Clinton’s influence spans generations and genres, as reflected in the words of some of the artists he inspired: “George Clinton is one of the greatest musical minds in history,” — Flea. “If you really listen to The Chronic, it’s Parliament-Funkadelic all day,” — Dr. Dre. “We were sampling George Clinton records because that was the funk,” — Snoop Dogg. “George Clinton is the architect of a whole sound… a whole vibe,” — Erykah Badu. “That whole universe that George Clinton created…it’s everything,” — Thundercat. “George Clinton gave us permission to be ourselves…completely,” — Angelo Moore. “There would be no Prince without James Brown and George Clinton,” — Prince.

The inaugural P-Funk Festival will bring together artists and fans for a full-scale cultural celebration honoring Clinton’s legacy and the future of funk. See the line-up HERE.

A longtime Tallahassee resident, Clinton’s impact extends beyond music into the cultural fabric of the community, making the event both a global and deeply local celebration. Kicking off the P-Funk Festival, Leon County Commissioner Nick Maddox will present a formal proclamation recognizing “85 Years of Funk History” with opening performances by the Godby Marching Band followed by an onstage ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I look forward to honoring Clinton, as he continues making a cultural and economic imprint in our community,” shared Maddox.

The proclamation recognizes George Clinton as a pioneering architect of funk music whose work has influenced generations of artists, and honors a career spanning more than six decades, including induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It also designates the inaugural P-Funk Festival as a historic cultural celebration of funk’s global legacy and ongoing evolution.

The inaugural P-Funk Festival: Let’s Take It To Tha Stage is the first festival dedicated entirely to the Parliament-Funkadelic universe. Celebrating its history, cultural impact, and the next generation of artists carrying the funk forward.
