New York City-based alternative-pop artist Jess Yaffa will release her new single and video, “Spill My Guts,” on September 18, marking the first taste of her forthcoming EP, FALSE SPRING, due later this fall. Pre-save “Spill My Guts” HERE.
“Spill My Guts” introduces a significant new chapter for Yaffa. The song was the first track she created after making the decision to produce her new music herself and helped establish the creative direction for FALSE SPRING, her first entirely self-written and self-produced body of work.
The song blends an upbeat, driving musical tempo with deeply vulnerable, yet empowering lyrics. Yaffa shares, “I wanted it to feel like the song just swells up and warms the heart to the point where you feel like you’re word vomiting,” says Yaffa. “It’s a dreamy song about, ‘What if this actually goes well this time?’ But regardless of what happens, I’m happy I said it anyway.”
Across her upcoming EP, FALSE SPRING, Yaffa explores falling for someone, searching for belief and identity, protecting optimism from negativity, confronting depression and ultimately learning that home and stability can be something you create for yourself. In nature, a false spring is a period of unexpected warmth that arrives before winter has truly ended. Temperatures rise, plants begin to emerge and it briefly appears that a new season has arrived, until the cold suddenly returns.
Musically, Yaffa approaches alternative-pop without rigid boundaries. Some songs embrace immediate pop melodies and hooks, while others carry a stronger rock or roots-rock edge, with more intimate moments drawing from the directness and vulnerability of singer-songwriter music. Rather than forcing the songs into a single sonic identity, Yaffa allows each track to follow the story it needs to tell.
The project also represents an evolution from Yaffa’s 2025 debut album, Thoughts That Keep Me Up at Night, which was produced in collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Scott Jacoby (Coldplay, John Legend, Vampire Weekend). The Big Takeover praised the album’s combination of “infectious pop hooks with astute, singer-songwriter vibes and indie authenticity, with enough rock and roll weight to drive it forward.”
With FALSE SPRING, Yaffa takes the production reins herself, expanding her role beyond songwriting and performing into every stage of shaping the music. She worked closely with Brooklyn based Degraw Sound audio engineer Leah Dunn to bring the recordings to completion, beginning with “Spill My Guts.” “We met via DM and instantly hit it off,” Yaffa says. “It started off with just working on ‘Spill My Guts,’ but it was inevitable that we would finish out the rest of the songs together.”
The collaboration reflects Yaffa’s commitment to working with and supporting other women in music, particularly female artists, producers, engineers and creators taking ownership of both creative and technical spaces within the industry.
With “Spill My Guts,” Yaffa opens FALSE SPRING on a moment of possibility: taking the emotional risk of saying what you feel without knowing what comes next. It’s a fitting beginning for a project about discovering that uncertainty isn’t necessarily something to overcome, it can be part of becoming who you are.
