Finnish metal outfit, Amberian Dawn have released their ninth studio album, Looking For You (Napalm) and this has to be one of the most unique albums that this reviewer has heard in a long time. The members of Amberian Dawn seem to have the right combination of power metal and infectious pop melody.

Right out of the gates, “United” opens with larger than life electronic synth keys that instantly put a huge smile on your face. Then the rest of the band chimes in with the heavier drums, bass, and guitar to lead the way for vocalist, Capri Virkkunen to lay down her impressive and soaring vocals.

The title track, “Looking For You” really shows off that blending of 80’s pop sensibility. It is actually my favorite track on the album. Those heavy synth elements and memorable chorus really drive the track home, and will get your body moving and your head banging all at the same time.

“Symphony No.1 Part 3 – Awakening switches gears completely and the band delivers and a mesmerizing and enchanting symphonic metal masterpiece. Recruiting vocalist Fabio Lione (Ex Rhapsody of Fire) to duet with Capri was an absolutely brilliant decision. Their voices, while very different, work very well together. Put that together with the gorgeous musical instrumentation, and you have an instantly classic track that crosses all boundaries of music.

“Universe” is a haunting and dark melodic ballad that really changes the temp of the album and showcases Amberian Dawn in a completely different light. Gorgeous layering of instruments and vocals really set this track apart from the rest of the album.

“Au Revoir” is a breathtaking piano piece that segues into the album closer, “Cherish My Memory.” Originally appearing on their 2014 release, Magic Forest, the track has been remastered and sounds absolutely killer.

I have saved the best for last. Amberian Dawn has been described as a metalized version of the legendary Swedish pop sensation, ABBA. On the album, they included a cover of ABBA’s “Lay All Your Love On Me”, and it is quite honestly one of the coolest things I have heard. My love for metal and pop music and have been paired in such a unique and enjoyable way.  Definitely the centerpiece of the album, and it really shows the direction that the band is moving toward.

Looking For You is quite the breath of fresh air. Loved the blending of 80’s pop elements, synth keyboards, and driving metal guitars. Vocalist, Capri Vurkkunen possesses incredible range and makes each one of these songs come to life with that vocal prowess. If you’re looking for a unique listening experience, then look no further than Amberian Dawn. Grab a copy of this album, turn the volume all the way up and lose yourself in all its musical glory.

Rating: 8/10 Stars.
