Black Veil Brides has a new 4-song EP called The Mourning out on Sumerian Records on October 21st, 2022. Regarding The Mourning, Andy Biersack said “We are so excited to share The Mourning with our fans who have supported us for so many years. They have lifted us up and are the reason we are able to have a career making music. A lot of this record touches on how galvanized we felt coming out of a very tumultuous few years as a band. It is a genuine representation of how reenergized we feel. Not only as musicians, but also as friends. The making of our previous record The Phantom Tomorrow with Erik Ron was one of the greatest experiences we’ve had collectively in the studio. The reception to that album was so passionate from the BVB Army that we felt like it was a no brainer to continue writing and recording with Erik and Anthony. This is how we came to  put together this EP that I think is a great illustration of where we are as a band and where we want to continue to go musically moving forward. It’s pissed off, hopeful, introspective, honest and above all else something we are extremely proud to release.”

My first experience with Black Veil Brides was when I photographed them at Vans Warped Tour 2015. The energy awaiting their appearance on stage was contagious. When they began to perform, I was hooked. Some songs are stronger than others, like any band, but I was very excited to listen to The Mourning because of how often I’ve had songs like “Heart of Fire” and “Knives and Pens” on repeat and in my playlist rotation.

The Mourning starts out with the track “Devil.” Some albums take a while to get your attention, but not this EP. I was instantly in love with the riffs, the sound, and the same energy I remember them having on stage when I saw them years ago. I pictured them playing this song live immediately. I’m sure it will inspire mosh pits, if the listener hasn’t already started moshing all by themselves while listening to it. I listened to “Devil” a few times in a row, catching something different each time. It’s a strong start and a well put together song that will not disappoint fans of Black Veil Brides.

“Saviour 2” flowed nicely and reminded me of some of their earlier works. It picks up nicely on the chorus and has impactful lyrics that I’m sure will resonate with many listeners.

“The Revival” is fun. This one reminded me of something that might have played on MTV’s Headbanger’s Ball back in the day. The sound was entirely Black Veil Brides, but I couldn’t help but think of how well it would pair with the darker music video style of bands like Killswitch Engage. It wasn’t as upbeat as “Devil,” but more so than “Saviour 2.”

The Mourning finishes up with “Better Angels.” “Better Angels” is dark, gritty, and yet a fun listen that had me tapping my foot.

Overall, The Mourning packs a punch! Black Veil Brides conveys more emotion in only four songs that some bands don’t manage with entire albums. The Mourning is consistent with their style, yet new and fresh. Fans of Black Veil Brides will love The Mourning, but even if you haven’t enjoyed their prior work, you shouldn’t sleep on The Mourning. It’s worth a listen.
