Australian Rockers Dying Sun have arrived with their debut LP, Doomsday Cometh via Bandcamp. The trio consists of Matty D (vocals/guitars), Damon Robinson (guitars/bass) and Anthony Dwyer (drums).
Dying Sun formed in 2019 fresh out of the 90’s Brisbane metal scene the trio once dwelled in. Doomsday Cometh was recorded in Matty D’s studio, while Nathan Bailley and Anthony Douches mixed and mastered the final recordings in the States. The LP contains twelve doom -laden songs with clean vocals, distorted guitars and lyrics based on the dark side of humanity.
“Suicide Ride” starts things off like a caffeine kick. Matty D is the tenacious antagonist on vocals set to the backdrop of a raw metal edge and aggressive riffs. Dying Sun then swap a heavy metal sound with down tuned instrumental breaks on Serpent Rising. The tempo slows to a lethargic pace as the band’s rhythm fluctuates like a snake slithering through muddy waters. The hypnotic vocals encapsulate the listener over dissonant chords and moderate drum fills.
As the LP moves through its tentative steps, Dying Sun experiment with various tempos and rhythmic structures to find identity within their sound. “Deepest Winter” ventures with progressive elements in the extensive intro that culminates in a spoken word performance.
“Psycho Junkie” screams radio hit with its hook-laden chorus and 90’s grunge timbre. The title track harks back to old school gothic acts like Celtic Frost, as dark, angry vocals hiss over a 70’s psychedelic sound.
And finally, “Freedom’s Death” wraps things up with a chilly finale. Mesmerizing vocals charm over fuzzy guitar lines and a screeching organ to bring this outing to a satisfying end.
Overall, Doomsday Cometh is a pleasant start with interesting concepts, imaginative songwriting and some ideas for them to base on. Doomsday is certainly coming with this collection.
