Gardner/James is musical collaboration between Janet Gardner, whom you may know from the band Vixen, and songwriter/producer Justin James, who has worked bands liked Staind and Collective Soul. They are released their third full length studio album, Synergy to the masses on August 7, 2020.
Fusing together melodic sensibilities, big hooks, and monster guitar sound with modern production, Gardner/James have created an album of stellar rock music for modern times. I believe that this album will appeal to all different types of rock fans.
The album’s first single, “Wounded” opens up the album and sets the tone for the album right away. Colossal and catchy riffs paired with Gardner’s powerful vocals will leave you wanting more after that first listen. The song is a killer and infectious rocker laced with an emotion filled chorus. Impressive to say the least.
Following up “Wounded” is the noticeably darker “You Can Kiss This.” Heavier riffs and vengeance fueled vocals make this track a definite highlight. I really felt the pain and anger in Janet’s voice. This one is just crazy pedal to the metal madness, and I loved every second of it. Watch out for that guitar solo at the 2:23 mark!
”Rise Up” has the feel of a modern day fight song. The vocals sound spectacular, and that bottom end groove just makes this empowering track even more powerful.
The mid-tempo “Running to Her” is pure melodic rock gold. It has a great 80’s/90’s AOR feel and reminds me of the Heart classic, “Who Will You Run To?”
“Lonely We Fight” is the second of two singles released in anticipation of Synergy. The video for the track features photo submissions from friends and fans during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. The song is an inspirational piece of music that really showcases the magic connection between these two very talented musicians.
The first of two ballads on the album, “Say You Will” opens up with somber piano and guitar that builds the track up gradual and paves the way for hauntingly beautiful vocals. The turns into an incredible opus with a guitar solo that will have you rewinding over and over just to rock that air guitar to.
Getting things back into the rock and roll spirit is the intense and driving, “Gone.” This is the perfect song to put on and crank all the way up and lose yourself. Whether you’re alone in your space, or out on the road, “Gone” will make you want to disappear away from the world for a while. This passage from the song says it all. “Going outside, catch my breath, going for a ride, pay my debt. Going to a party, have a shot of Jack (Daniels), go out for a smoke and never coming back.”
“Talk to Myself” closes out the album, and what an amazing way to go out. The track is a crazy, bluesy number that you can’t help but move to. It’s a really spirited track about the things that go through your mind when you’re alone. It is a completely relatable track, especially in modern times. Had this one on repeat a lot!
The team of Gardner/James have done it again. They have an incredible synergy (see what I did there) when it comes to creating great rock songs. With every song, you can not only hear, but you can feel their passion and genuine love for music. That being said, pick up this album and support musicians that love what they do.
