Industrial/Electronic Metal band, Sick N’ Beautiful released their latest self-produced album Starstruck (7/15) on Frontiers Records as a follow up to Element of Sex (2018). The band describe themselves as “…intergalactic nomads, performing our numbers for the enjoyment of all species we meet in our travels.”

When asked about the rumors of their “questionable” means of making ends meet, they confess, “…life in space is never easy.” As I listened to the first track of the album, “Tonight We Go To War,” I was immediately captivated. It is a perfect way to start off the album as it quickly builds to a frenzy as an electronic metal anthem should. The title track, “Starstruck,” is explosive as lead singer Herma’s strong rock vocals takes us on a journey through the pitfalls of Hollywood. “Drop It 2 the B,” with its electro pop/industrial beats, quickly became one of my favorite tracks with the memorable chorus and the guitar breakdowns.

The album continues to build with the industrial song “This Is Not The End” and should come with a warning label: “Lyrics will stick in your head!” “Defy The Light” is an assault to your ear drums (in the best of ways) with metal guitars, electronic beats and Herma’s incredible vocals. When listening to the guitar breakdown I dare you to resist headbanging as you raise your metal horns. “Deep End Dark” is a slow build with drums, which hits you in the soul with Herma’s fierce vocals and metal drums.

“Schadenfreude” is an electro pop song with stand-out guitar riffs. I learned that “Schadenfreude” is the German phrase for, “The experience of pleasure, joy or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.”

“Pull of Gravity” has an almost cinematic build with its industrial/electronic pop edge. Herma’s vocals shine in the chorus so powerfully, you can feel her anger and passion. “Pray Tell Me” starts off with cool drum and electronic beats that build to a frenzy as Herma’s vocals shatter the roof, making this the standout track of the album.

“Angels Be Fallin’” begins with Herma’s softer vocals that lilt in juxtaposition to the powerhouse metal guitar riffs. This cognitive dissonance gives this band its (sick) beauty. The last song “Ytopynonavevanonypoty” is a wild industrial/metal song and Herma’s powerful metal screams are at the fore front of the closing song.

Sick N’ Beautiful’s Starstruck takes you on an incredible listening journey and the unforgettable songs will stay with you. The band’s unique storyline of being intergalactic nomads, visuals and costumes add to their allure.
