Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our listeners to some deserving up and coming artists/ bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass and we hope you do too! Today, we’d like to shine the spotlight on American Prophet!
American Prophet is a Rock band based out of Atlanta, Ga. Formerly signed to Century Media Records in 2016, The band has returned from their 6-year hiatus with their newest single “Die Young” produced by Kyle Odell. “American Prophet” named after the late mystic Edgar Cayce, plan to tour again in 2023 while they will be releasing more singles throughout the rest of the year.
We sat down with vocalist Donny Thomas for a fun Q&A session!
Every superhero or villain has an origin and a band is no different minus the radioactive spiders and secret government experiments. What is the origin of American Prophet
Something has always pulled me towards music, since I was 10 years old, I have been obsessed. My father had a beat-up old Yamaha acoustic, and I used to sit in my room trying to figure out how to play it. I never had any lessons or anything but after years of sitting in my room trying to figure out how to sing and play guitar, I finally felt comfortable enough to share what I had written.
Band names can have a meaning or it can be a name pulled out of a hat. What’s the story behind American Prophet?
American Prophet is in some ways a nod to Edgar Cayce, I am an avid reader and love topics out of the ordinary. Other than that, I created a persona that is the American Prophet. One that prophesied the dark, empty, delusional plane of reality we are a part of.
What are you currently working on?
Currently we are working on finishing an EP, unfortunately due to personal health concerns we will not be playing live or touring until 2023. We will be continuing to release new songs, videos, content, etc. throughout the remainder of the year though.
If you have any tattoos, what was your very first one and does it have any meaning behind it?
It is the Sumerian Cuneiform symbol for “God” or what would be the supreme spiritual deity. It is in the O of American Prophet in our logos. Recently my friend who did the tattoo passed away and that is one of the inspirations behind writing our new single “Die Young.”
What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
I would have to say Rocko’s Modern Life or Hey Arnold. I still love cartoons to be completely honest. I love imagination, I love nostalgia, I loved that I had the ability to escape from reality as a kid into a different universe. Anything is possible in the cartoon universe and that has always been incredibly intriguing.
