Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our readers to some deserving up and coming artists/bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass, and we hope you do too! Today we’d like to shine the spotlight on Frequency Overload!
Frequency Overload is a Long Island-based metal band delivering a hardcore-infused twist on Crossover Thrash. Founded by guitarist Corey Schaefer and drummer Kevin Daily, the band draws from their deep roots in metal, with Corey’s history in bands like Uncle Jack and Misery Kills, and Kevin’s background in Exit Verona and Akalamathesia. Vocalist Mr. Bush (formerly of Social Disease and Pummel) and bassist Steve Little (Cobalt 60, Ionize) round out the lineup.
Their debut album *Fate Anthropic* released in May of 2024, has the band’s lyrics confront life’s darker themes with intensity, driven by their collective influences from Led Zeppelin to Lamb of God. With strong support from their families, Frequency Overload has built a presence in the NYC and Long Island metal scenes, including slots at events like Spring Slaughter and tours alongside Spoiler NYC.
We sat down with Mr. Bush for a short but fun Q&A session!
Every superhero or villain has an origin and a band is no different minus the radioactive spiders and secret government experiments. What is the origin of FREQUENCY OVERLOAD?
The foundations of Frequency Overload began with guitarist Corey Schaefer and drummer Kevin Daily, who realized they shared a metal history when first connected through their families. Corey’s time in bands like Uncle Jack, Nothing Sacred, Kryonix, Misery, and Misery Kills led to a solid foundation in guitar and songwriting, one which also led to support slots for Devildriver and Kittie. Kevin honed his percussion roots by jamming to Metallica’s Kill ‘Em All when he was 14. Later, a run in Akalamathesia and tenure in Long Island’s iconic Exit Verona led to reigning strong in the Hard Rock scene to include shows at the legendary B.B. King venue in NYC. With a new metal venture in mind, Corey set out to round out a lineup.
Self-proclaimed “Chokalist” Mr. Bush stepped into the vocal spotlight, no stranger to the experience with a track record as the frontman of Social Disease, Ironlung, Evileye, Welt, and Pummel, and former labelmate of Dominus-era Michael Poulsen on Progress Records. Steve Little completed the lineup as an experienced bassist of 30 years, playing in Cobalt 60, Intogreen, Image Within, and Ionize, always with an eye out to get involved with new music. The unfortunate loss of a bandmate led Steve to step away from music for some time, but Frequency Overload was just the right project to bring him back on the scene.
Band names can have a meaning or it can be a name pulled out of a hat. What’s the story behind Frequency Overload?
We were in the process of spitballing band names for a bit, and coming up with what you would expect…Vulgar Mallard, Tortured Moral Oppression, Uncle Satan, and other dumb titles that really don’t fit what we are. It was our bassist Steve who came up with FREQUENCY OVERLOAD, and it definitely fits the different, diverse nature of our tunes.
What are you currently working on?
After the 2024 release of our debut album FATE ANTHROPIC, and signing with SODEH Records, our commitment has us currently in the studio writing album number 2! We are really looking forward to getting the rough versions to SODEH, for pre production ideas and feedback! We are also looking at metal fests to play for 2025 to expand our audience.
Are you a good cook? What’s your best dish to prepare?
This is Mr. Bush, and yes I am a good cook. For about 10 years I was a cook and kitchen manager for restaurants. I would have to say my best dish is my world famous seafood croquettes! Similar to seafood cakes but with a more robust moisture holding football shape. People would come from all around when my seafood croquettes were on the special board!
We love cereal, especially at night. For some odd reason, it seems to taste better then. Do you have a favorite cereal?
There is a Swiss style Muesli called Alpen that is near and dear to my heart. There are certain memories I cherish and associate through food items. It was my brother Robert who loved and introduced me to Alpen cereal. Fond reminiscence of carefree mornings growing up…Long Island, New York.
