Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our listeners to some deserving up and coming artists/bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass and we hope you do too! Today we’d like to shine the spotlight on the gothic metal band She Was The Carnation and the Rose.
She Was the Carnation and the Rose (USA) was formed in the late rainy months of 2023, by singer Noémi Sárog, songwriter Michael Seebold, drummer Bill Eagen. The band’s debut album The Guardian Angel comprises five original songs with atmospheres ranging from the wintry, to the melancholic, to the serene. The Guardian Angel is also the first installment in the band’s planned trilogy of albums (the “stained glass” trilogy), across which listeners can expect a palette of dream atmospheres, mellifluent and dark passages interwoven, the odd jazz nocturne or classical minuet.
We had the chance to sit down for a short, but fun Q&A session with singer Noémi Sárog and songwriter Michael Seebold of She Was The Carnation and the Rose.
Every superhero or villain has an origin and a band is no different minus the radioactive spiders and secret government experiments. What is the origin of She Was the Carnation and the Rose?
Seebold: Noemi and I had worked together on stage productions in theatre, before music. Late 2023, I started arrangements for what would become The Guardian Angel, and we had recordings underway by the fall.
Band names can have a meaning or it can be a name pulled out of a hat. What’s the story behind She was the Carnation and the Rose?
Seebold: It sounds like something overheard in a dream, or the title of a nineteenth-century symbolist painting.
What are you currently working on?
Sárog: We are working on our next album.
Seebold: We’ll be in the studio through the end of September or early October for the next set of songs. We just started tracking drums yesterday.
If music was over today and you had to go into professional wrestling, what would your wrestling name be?
Sárog: Favorite wrestling name would be ‘Citromádé’ (lemon and lemonade in Hungarian squashed together).
Are you a good cook? What’s your best dish to prepare?
Sárog: I’m a kitchen witch. Give me the name of a dish and I’ll make it for you. Best dish: mákos guba (Hungarian poppy seed bread pudding).
