Artist Spotlight is a segment that we started to introduce our readers to some deserving up and coming artists/bands. They have made an impact on us for all of the right reasons. We think they kick ass, and we hope you do too! Today we’d like to shine the spotlight Society of Villains!
Society of Villains is back and more dangerous than ever with their upcoming EP ‘Good & Evil,’ out in the spring. Packed with electrifying tracks that blur the line between light and dark, this next body of work promises to captivate and thrill listeners all the same. Prepare for a musical experience like no other—are you ready for the chaos?
Founded in 2023 from merciless treachery, Society of Villains was spawned. With a hunger for revenge swimming through their veins, these self-professed villains bred their collective musical tastes into a dark alt-rock infused evil brew. The super insidious group is made up of viral artist Sam Tinnesz and the multi-platinum producers Ian Brendon Scott and Mark Jackson. Their first EP dripped with villainous anthems that undoubtedly stirred up skeletons in the closet, while also offering any inductee into their society an outlet for fiery, fiendish energy. The mix of Ian and Mark’s riotous production with Sam’s sinister vocals was enough to wake the dead of any era. And it did — the band having climbed onto the US Rock Charts with lead single ‘Smoke & Trouble,’ reaching 21 on the SMR Chart and Top 30* Activator Rock Chart. Their US radio debut impact can be summed up by Andy Herrin from 102.0 The Buz (WBUZ/Nashville), “Nothing gets me more stoked than seeing a supergroup come out of nowhere, especially when that supergroup turns out to be rad and has a sound all their own. All three members are music industry veterans and have their own careers, which is what makes Society Of Villains even more unique and special.” On top of their success at radio, the songs have also reaped considerable growth across all major DSPs within the first six months of release, garnering 6.5 million streams collectively since their debut EP earlier this year.
We sat down with Society of Villains for a short, but fun Q& A session.
Every superhero or villain has an origin and a band is no different minus the radioactive spiders and secret government experiments. What is the origin of Society of Villains? If this is a singer and not a band, tell us the origin of how you got into music?
Society of Villains: Society of Villains started out as a group of friends who wanted to make music by their own rules, on their own terms. The original idea of our formation was to vent our frustrations in song form illuminating the various traumas, deceits and betrayals we’ve each experienced as both individuals and musicians. However, the further into the project we got, we realized that lots of people were connecting to these themes, so we found a real joy in not only the therapy we were getting out of sharing our experiences, but also the way our fans were relating to our music and stories.
Band names can have a meaning or it can be a name pulled out of a hat. What’s the story behind Society of Villains?
SOV: There is definitely an intention behind our name. We wanted to create a space for our fans to feel included in the project. Hence a society of villains. At the end of the day, we’re not claiming to be supervillains, rather owning such a label that this society throws around so carelessly these days.
What are you currently working on?
SOV: We just finished our second EP, Good & Evil, which is scheduled for release in April. Our first single off that EP, “Daredevil,” was released just a few weeks ago.
Who was your first celebrity crush?
SOV: Winnie from Wonder Years melted my 5 year old heart. – Sam
SOV: Selma Hayek. – Mark
If music was over today and you had to go into professional wrestling, what would your wrestling name be?
SOV: Mark “The Mauler” – Mark
We love cereal, especially at night. For some odd reason, it seems to taste better then. Do you have a favorite cereal?
SOV: Cinnamon Toast Crunch all day. – Ian
What was the first CD/album that you bought and what was your most recent CD/album purchase?
SOV: Green Day’s ‘Dookie’ and Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ were two of my very first albums. They forever leaned my preference towards rock music. The last album I purchased was Jutes’ Sleepyhead EP. I love the mix of hip hop and deftones on it. I think he’s one of the most unique artists in the alternative space right now. – Sam
If you’re into comics, who is your favorite superhero and why?
SOV: I love the Teen Titans. From them, I’d have to say Raven because I definitely think she’d have Society of Villains on her demon playlist for sure. – Ian
Are you a good cook? What’s your best dish to prepare?
SOV: I’m a Grill Master, I love BBQing anything. – Mark
