Brooklyn fuzz lord Matt C. White returns with his new single Ursa, a hypnotic psych-rock slow burn steeped in spring reverb, tape echo, motorik pulse, and towering fuzzed-out guitars. Beginning in a sparse, trance-like churn before collapsing into a dense and chaotic climax, the track draws equally from classic psychedelia, krautrock repetition, garage rock grit, and stoner-fuzz weight.

The track channels the expansive psychedelia of King Gizzard, The Black Angels, Slift, and Hawkwind while retaining White’s distinctly Southern, fuzz-drenched sound. Packed with layered guitar harmonies and cinematic momentum, Ursa serves as both the emotional climax and final descent of The Flood’s conceptual arc.

White explains, “‘Ursa’ is kinda the finale of the whole flood experience. I wanted to pull influence from every other song on the record, but really make it this sort of driving fever-dream car-chase soundtrack. It’s based loosely around the story (one of the oldest in human history) of Ursa the great bear running from four hunters through the nightsky. “

Following A Cosmic Year — described by The Big Takeover as “rock music that unites the past with the present and points to a healthy future for the genre” — The Flood finds Matt C. White expanding his palette, drawing from psych, dub, and driving rhythmic forms to shape a more fluid and expansive approach. Like previous releases, White performs every instrument and vocal himself, assembling densely layered arrangements that balances chaos, melody, and momentum.

More info on Matt C. White:

Matt C. White is a Brooklyn-based artist and multi-instrumentalist whose music fuses Southern grit with vintage fuzz, psychedelic exploration, and crushing weight. Raised in rural North Carolina, White developed his signature guitar style through swampy blues and heavy rock before becoming a fixture in New York’s underground scene with projects including Certain Death, 95 Bulls, San Salvo, and Grandpa Jack.

Over the years, White has built a reputation for genre-bending heavy music that balances soulful melodies with blown-out amplifiers, spring reverb-soaked atmospheres, and tape echo trips into the outer reaches of psychedelia. His solo catalog stretches from the haunted Appalachia of Wallow in the Hollow to the sludge-drenched weight of Punishers, but 2025’s A Cosmic Year marked his most expansive statement to date.

Blending psychedelic rock opera, vintage fuzz worship, Southern groove, and searing vocal performances, A Cosmic Year pushed deeper into cosmic territory while retaining the grit and intensity that define White’s sound.
