Canadian rockers Danko Jones, who are known for their energetic live shows, have managed to capture that energy on their eleventh album, Electric Sounds. The Toronto trio has been rocking stages since their formation in 1996, and this new album shows off their mastery of the art of hard rock. Even the arrangement of the song order adds to the energy.
The album opens with the track “Guess Who’s Back”. A strong guitar riff and hard, commanding voice announces “Guess who’s back/ Me, M***erf***er!” opens the album. That line alone sets the tone for the whole album. Vocalist, guitarist and band namesake Danko Jones does not let up throughout the album. The energy in his voice combined with the fast and hard guitar riffs carry through each and every song. In the song “Electric Sounds” Jones announces in the first verse “Gonna smash a thousand guitars tonight/ light a match and start a big bonfire/ Gonna send a message to everyone/ No matter what, I can’t be outdone”. With that energy and attitude, you can’t help but envision this on stage, complete with guitar smashing. Even the closing song “Shake Your City” carries the same feeling. Jones seems to be channeling the Sex Pistols, with the screaming guitar and edgy voice. The addition of the crowd crying out along with Jones, “Shake your city, we’re gonna shake your city” creates the excitement usually only felt at a live show.
For almost 30 years, Danko Jones has been honing their talent of delivering exciting, energetic music. They have learned from their influences and created their own sound, their own attitude. Electric Sounds brings all of that together in eleven songs for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!
