UK rockers, Passion have just released a new EP of cover songs aptly titled, Under the Covers (Frontiers Records SRL). The band pays faithful tributes to such hard rock heavyweights as RATT, Winger, Slaughter, and the almighty Van Halen.
Kicking things off is “Poundcake” from Van Halen’s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Love that these guys tackled a Sammy Hagar era tune! All in all, it’s a really solid cover that stays true to the original.
Next up, the is the Slaughter classic “Up All Night.” Guitarist, Chance Vanderlain adds some serious muscle to the intro with those chugging guitars. Vocalist, Lion Ravarez sings in a higher register, and this track most definitely is tailor made for that.
Moving on, the band brings the sleaze and groove when they take on RATT’s “Loving You Is A Dirty Job.” It’s not an easy task to cover RATT because Stephen (Pearcy, RATT vocalist) has such a distinctive and gritty voice. Beyond that, the song still has that undeniable and sexy groove.
Closing out the EP is “Easy Come, Easy Go’ originally made famous by Winger. Mad respect to a band that chooses to cover Winger. Great song selection here. I think they easily could have done “Seventeen” or “Spell I’m Under” and still would have killed it.
Under the Covers is a really fun and enjoyable listening experience. I grew up listening to this kind of music, and I can easily tell that the boyz (yes that was done on purpose) really put a lot of heart and soul into what feels like a labor of love. If you’re a fan of this kind of music and want to take a trip down memory lane, I highly suggest grabbing a copy of this!
Rating: 8/10 Stars.
