Swedish alternative metal quintet, Past Five are gearing up to release their latest EP, Detox on May 8, 2020. The title of the album is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a detox or renewal from various turmoil and destruction within the band. The end result is some killer high energy music with thought provoking lyrics.
“Playing With Fire (When Your Friends Are Enemies)” gets things started in a big way with bombastic guitars and undeniable pop-punk influences. Really loving the energy of these five individuals.
The follow up track is “Kryptonite.” “Kryptonite has noticeably more groove and melody than the previous track, and I am loving the background harmonies in the chorus. Pay attention to the guitar in the song, as the sprinkle a familiar riff throughout the song, and it absolutely fits, considering their sound. Whether or not it was intentional, it is still pretty cool.
“Close to the Exit” is just pure intensity from the second it starts. There is a great underlying rhythm that just makes you want to dance around at the same time you’re banging your head.
Drummer, Jerri Lassinniemi does an excellent job of keeping that bottom end groove on lock.
“God Forbid” is the album’s closer. Setting itself apart from the rest of the EP, the track is darker and overflowing with raw emotion. Lead vocalist, Jonathan Wallin leaves his heart and everything else on the floor by the end of this song. Props to the triple guitar attack of this band. Leads, riffs, solos, OH MY!
Past Five really took me by surprise! From the moment go, I was thoroughly impressed with their energy and musicianship. They write infectious, catchy songs that make you think and most importantly, make you feel something genuine. On May 8th, grab yourself a copy of this EP, and experience everything that I did when I hit play on Detox.
