Nearly 30 years ago, Canadian hard rock outfit, Sven Gali made a name for themselves with a powerful and rockin’ self-titled debut album on BMG Records. Blending together the best elements of 80’s and 90’s hard rock, Sven Gali made quite the name for themselves with a couple of hit singles and extensive touring.
Fast forward to 2020, and then band is back ready to reclaim their place in today’s modern hard rock scene. On June 12, 2020, the band will release their brand-new EP, 3. With the exception of a couple of singles in 2018 and 2019 respectively, this is the first batch of new material since the 1990’s.
Opening track, “Kill the Lies” is an infectious modern rock track with big guitars and even bigger vocals. Vocalist, Dave Wanless commands your attention with such power and conviction in his voice. Huge chorus that will get stuck in your head easily!
“You Won’t Break Me” has a noticeably heavier groove laced with monster riffs from the guitar duo of Andy Frank and Sean Williamson. Love the vocal transitions and inspiring lyrics in the chorus.
Three tracks in and the band is not slowing down. Just the opposite, as they are bringing it even heavier with “NOW.” Bombastic opening segues to a huge chorus, and all you can do is bang your head and throw that fist in the air as you hear Dave (Wanless) cry out, “Right now is NOW!” This definitely my pick for best song on the record.
Closing things out is the heavy and grungy, “Hurt.” At the 1:52 mark, there is a really cool instrumental passage that lasts about 40 seconds, and it is phenomenal. Precision timing on the drums and the low-end riffs really give the track its own identity.
I was super excited to be given the opportunity to review 3. I remember picking up their debut album when it was first released and being blown away then. In 2020, I have been reminded of that overwhelming feeling. The songs are extremely well written and do not sound dated at all. When June 12th rolls around, grab yourself a copy of this killer EP.
Rating: 8/10 Stars.
