Last month, Los Angeles duo Cash & Skye announced their debut full length album, Just A Stranger. The duo, comprised of Henri Cash and Sophia Skye, have been casually writing and recording songs together for almost 7 years. They put no pressure on a timeline or genre for their music, often creating songs together that they never knew would see the light of day.

Today, Cash & Skye unveil the next single from their album, “Pasadena Girls.” “Being born and raised in Pasadena, I have a lot of love for my hometown,” Sophia muses. “There are a lot of cultural cornerstones we are known for, like the formation of Van Halen or being the first place Michael Jackson ever moon walked. And yet, there are some things people don’t know about us quite yet.”

Following their successful 7” “No More Candy” (Third Man Records) in 2021, this new album’s alluring infusion of Americana and Rock and Roll, executed with a punk-rock ethos, documents the band’s 7 year musical journey. Some of the songs were recorded with just Henri and Sophia, and some were joined by the tight-knit musicians from Cash’s prolific and beloved band, Starcrawler. This long-awaited chronicle of songs were recorded in spare moments over the years between international tours, college classes, and eight-hour shifts. It explores modern recording techniques combined with classic analog tape recording in an attempt to naturally capture the music in a way that stays true to the sounds of the classic records that influenced them. Although very different from the raucous chaos of Starcrawler, these songs dive deep into the traditions of country storytelling while still maintaining a raw and honest edge.

“Pasadena Girls” is out today on all DSPs. Cash & Skye’s debut album, Just A Stranger, is due for release on February 21st.

Cash & Skye Bio:

Just A Stranger is the debut, full-length album from Cash & Skye, a Los Angeles duo comprised of Henri Cash and Sophia Skye. Although this may be her first full-length album, Sophia Skye is no stranger to the music scene. A self-proclaimed “C-list nepo-baby,” Sophia spent her childhood on a tour bus alongside her father, Pierre de Reeder, the bassist for the seminal indie-rock band Rilo Kiley. Some of her first memories involved concerts and festivals, and she even has the scars to prove it; at four years old, she tripped in the thick mud at the Glastonbury music festival, slicing open her lip and leaving a permanent gash. Growing up surrounded by many music legends of the early 2000’s indie scene, including Elliott Smith, Bright Eyes, and She & Him, it didn’t take Sophia long to find her own passion for singing and songwriting. She found her preferred style of singing in the records of artists such as Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt, women who were not afraid to belt their hearts out. Sophia was singing Willie Nelson songs at her school talent shows even if none of the other kids knew them, learning cowboy chords on guitar when she should’ve been doing her math homework. As a teenager, this love of classic country led Sophia to meeting the eccentric, trouble-making, and exceptionally talented Henri Cash, a fellow musician who played tuba in their school’s orchestra.

So yes, Sophia Skye and Henri Cash met in high school. The same school where Henri met singer Arrow de Wilde and formed what would become the beloved LA rock band Starcrawler. Starcrawler eventually took Henri away from high school in exchange for a busy touring schedule that spanned the globe, opening for such acts as Foo Fighters, Jack White, Beck, X, The Distillers, and many more.  Cash has also been sought out as a guest guitarist on many recordings, very notably on Dolly Parton’s version of Tom Petty’s “Southern Accents”, as well as live performances with Peter Case, Alejandro Escovedo, Peter Buck, and Lenny Kaye.  He was also cast as a young John Doe in X’s music video for “Alphabetland,” the title track off their triumphant return record.

Cash & Skye started writing songs together soon after meeting, casually writing and recording songs that they never knew would see the light of day.  The fact that there was no timeline, no genre to be adherent to, and no pressure to finish anything led to a freeing and pure documentation of each moment in time. Time that spanned the almost 7 years that are represented in this record.

Some of the songs were recorded with just Henri and Sophia, and some were joined by the tight-knit musicians in the Starcrawler family. This long-awaited chronicle of songs were recorded at 64 Sound in Highland Park and Starcrawler’s basement studio in Pasadena, recorded in spare moments over the years between international tours, college classes, and eight-hour shifts. It explores modern recording techniques combined with classic analog tape recording in an attempt to naturally capture the music in a way that stays true to the sounds of the classic records that influenced them.
