For the first time in 20 years, we are getting a new album from hard rockers, Hurricane. The band was created in the early 80’s by Tony Cavazo and Robert Sarzo, brothers of Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo of Quiet Riot fame. Add to this mix, current drummer Mike Hansen and vocalist Dan Schumann (original vocalist Kelly Hansen has been fronting Foreigner since 2005) and you get a blast from the past with a new twist!
Reconnected has that guitar heavy feel that was prevalent in their earlier music. The biggest difference now is that the sound is a much more refined, more mature sound. The lovers of 80’s hair metal will not be disappointed. The all important rock ballad makes an appearance with “Behind Your Shadow.” Schumann shows off his vocal range in this one, backed by blending melodies and solos delivered by Sarzo’s guitar. The surprise for me on this one is the cover of the Queen and David Bowie hit, “Under Pressure.” It’s an interesting take on it, with the heavier guitar sound, and it totally works.
Talking of covers, they did a remake of their hit, “On to You.” Schumann does a great job making this his own, with subtle changes in key and melody here and there. “Hand of Souls” brings in a bit of a bluesy sound, with it’s mournful guitar. The background vocals combined with Schumann’s adds to that feeling. “Hand of souls, don’t walk alone / I’ll never let you go / Take my hand and feel the pain / It reeks of yesterday.” Sarzo’s guitar at the beginning evokes a steely sound, feeding into the bluesy sound.
The resurgence of 80’s rock is not in doubt, with a lot of these bands putting out new music. After 20 years, Hurricane has reconnected to the music world, ready to blow you away with Reconnected.
