| Kid Sistr – the rising, Los Angeles-based indie rock trio of Sabel (guitar/vocals), Becca Webster (drums/vocals) and Sara Keden (bass/vocals) – have been slowly teasing the release of their highly anticipated new EP, American Teenage Prophecy, out today in full via Giant Music. The band will be celebrating with EP release shows in Los Angeles, CA at El Cid tomorrow, May 14 and in Brooklyn, NY at Elsewhere Zone One on May 30. |
| The singles that encompass the outstanding five-track extended play – co-produced by Suzy Shinn (Weezer, Fall Out Boy, Dua Lipa) at her home studio in Los Angeles – began trickling out six months ago with “Shitshow.” This year saw the band share the exhilarating title track “American Teenage Prophecy,” an ode to sapphic love which resulted in the first pregnancy from strap, and “Maniac,” hard-rocking in parts, dreamy and wistful in others, prompting multiple spins on the SiriusXM channel Alt Nation’s Advance Placementshow and FLOOD Magazine to write the song is “…all grunge riffs and heavy breakdowns—there’s nothing sweet about it,” and VEVO to declare the band a ‘DSCVR‘ artist, comparing them to Olivia Rodrigo, Paramore and Mannequin Pussy. | Speaking on the title track, the band implores its listeners to “…imagine a world where queer love is as natural as breathing. ‘American Teenage Prophecy’ feels like a flower blooming and inside it, there is an acoustic guitar and three gay girls. It was inspired by a late-night viewing of the 2010 biopic The Runaways, and asks: what if Joan Jett and Cherie Currie got married and started a family? The song is meant to imagine a world where queer romance flourishes in all the ways straight romance is allowed to: first kisses in tree houses, passing notes in study hall, high school prom, dorm room romance, in every decade, every state, every country. What are the love stories we could have if there was nothing standing in our way?” |
| While reflecting on the themes of “Maniac,” the trio called the song “…a grungy head nodder with a scream along chorus. It’s the soundtrack to finally dumping him and swearing off men forever. ‘Maniac’ can be used as an emergency intervention for when your friend keeps getting back together with *that* guy. Put it on volume 11 and repeat as needed.” |
