Mr. Bungle/Melvins The Glass House Pomona, Ca May 10th

Spotlights, a three-piece alternative/indie band, opened the show at The Glass House in Pomona, Ca on May 10th. The band featuring Sarah Quintero (bass, vocals, keys), Mario Quintero (guitar, vocals), and Chris Enriquez (drums) captivated the crowd. Their heavy, dark sound mixed with a chill, moody ambiance was mesmerizing to watch as they played songs “Sunset Burial “and “False Gods” off their newest release 2023’s Alchemy for the Dead.

As Melvins hit the stage, the packed crowd’s excitement was electric. The rock band founded in 1983, was instrumental in the formation of grunge rock and sludge metal. Buzz Osborne (vocals, guitars), Steven Shane McDonald (guitars), and Dale Crover (drums) brought the house down with their powerful, high-energy set. The band opened with “Snake Appeal”, a high-speed song that got the crowd super hyped. A highlight was their cool cover of The Beatles “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The band then went into “Never Say You’re Sorry” and “Hammering” off their 2022 album Bad Mood Rising. The set finished with the heavy “Night Goat” off their 1993 album Houdini. Melvins prove why they are such pioneers of grunge rock.  Their live show never lets up and the musical chemistry between Osborne, McDonald, and Crover is a sight to behold.

As the crowd was left amped up by the Melvins performance, Mr. Bungle began their set with “Welcome Back Kotter” theme song and went into the lighting fast “Bungle Grind” off their 2020 album The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo. The band consisting of founding members singer Mike Patton (Faith No More), bassist Trevor Dunn (Fantomas), guitarist Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3) alongside guitarist Scott Ian (Anthrax) and drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer) put on a heavy, fun experimental metal show. Patton circled the stage enticing the crowd to start their own mosh pit and made the pit go even wilder whenever he periodically blew his whistle. Drinks went flying high in the air as the crowd’s energy intensified. The crowd’s favorite song of the night was “Hypocrites/Habla Espanol O Muere” as they sang along with Patton screaming, “Speak Spanish Or Die!” The speedy guitar riffs by Spruance and Ian combined with Lombardo’s double bass drumming on “Anarchy up your Anus” was a highlight of the show. The band played a medley of covers, “Hell Awaits “by Slayer, the 1983 hit “True” by Spandau Ballet, Siege’s “Cold War” and then back into “True”. The intensely aggressive song “Sudden Death” ended their set and left the crowd wanting more as the crowd screamed for an encore. So, the band came back out on stage and performed three more songs, Van Halen’s “Loss of Control”, “My Ass is on Fire” (the first time it was played live since 2000), and “PEP” to end the wild night.
