Tri-state area based journalist and author, Adam Bernard, will deliver his second book – One Hit Wondering: The Stories of 40 One Hit Wonders + Other Tales From The Crates – on July 21st.
“Who doesn’t love a One Hit Wonder?,” the book opens up, and it’s a valid question. While your daily listening habits may center around rock, or country, or hip-hop, just one bar of “Steal My Sunshine” brings a smile to your face, and instantly you’re in a better mood than you were a minute ago.
With One Hit Wondering Bernard doesn’t simply discuss the hit each artist had, he does a deep dive on their other career achievements, going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole to get the story beyond the story.
“I want people to know that these artists are more than just their singular moment in the spotlight,” Bernard says, “they’ve led wildly fascinating lives, and have other songs that are well worth listening to.”
One Hit Wondering began as a monthly column on Bernard’s long-running music blog, Adam’s World, where he still writes it today. As he was approaching his third year of writing the column, he knew he wanted these stories preserved in book form.
“I didn’t want these stories lost to time. I think we’ve all seen how the internet isn’t forever. Websites go down, or get wiped, in the blink of an eye. I knew I needed to do something special for these artists.”
There is trivia galore to be found in One Hit Wondering. For instance, do you know the ‘80s one hit wonder (whose lone hit featured a couple of Jacksons in tow) has a family tree literally brimming with musical royalty?
How about the singer who had a major hit in the ‘90s, whose career actually began in the ‘70s, and who was one of the first women to learn Pro Tools?
There’s also the band from the ‘00s whose first recordings were funded, in part, by the singer doing a jingle for an IKEA commercial.
You’ll know about all this, and more after reading this book!
One Hit Wondering is absolutely loaded with information about the artists who created some of your favorite songs, and it’s a must-have for those who want to have the inside track – or perhaps just want to show off your music knowledge at your next social gathering.
