The Psychedlic Furs made a return to Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC on 11/3 when their Made of Rain Tour pulled into town. The show was listed as SOLD-OUT and there were the usually friendly “who needs tickets” people walking around in front of the venue. There was a strict mask on at all times unless taking a drink policy inside as well. Yes, these are different times from the Furs last visit to Cats Cradle. The band took to the stage to the sounds of “Run and Run” followed by another old gem “Dumb Waiters.” The band sounded tight and lead singer Richard Butler sounded like he hasn’t aged a bit. His “trademark” throaty rasp seemed the same as it always has throughout the years. The band then began an interesting setlist that included seven selectionsn off of their brilliant 2020 album Made of Rain. Yes, I know they are touring to promote the album, but almost half (7 of 18) of the setlist was from the new album. Maybe I’m just disappointed because “President Gas” or “Here Come Cowboys” weren’t played. Before I start getting blasted, I must clarify that I loved the songs played off of the new album.
The songs came quick, almost rapid fire with very little, sometimes no, talk in between songs. Butler was smiling during almost the entire show. He genuinely seemed to be having a great time performing. The entire band seemd to be as well. Butler did keep his sunglasses on during the entire show which is always intriguing to see by an artist. Is there a light sensitivity issue? I’m sorry, back to the music. The setlist did include their 80s MTV hits as well as their staple “Love My Way.” The encore of “Sister Europe” and “India” rounded out the show. I had a blast, but could have done with a few more of the earlier tracks included. It was a great 90 minute escape from reality and all of the troubles going on in our lives. Catch them if they come to your city on thsi run of dates. Also, if you haven’t checked out their 2020 album Made of Rain (their first new studio album in 29 years), you are truly missing out on someone very special.
