Tori Amos is currently on the road for the Ocean to Ocean Tour celebrating her album of the same name released in 2021. The tour began on June 17th in West Palm Beach, FL and will go through July 28th ending in Woodinville, WA. She’s also recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of her debut Little Earthquakes with a few special releases.
It’s interesting because I still remember the first time I heard Tori Amos was when I saw her appear on The Tonight Show almost 30 years ago performing “Crucify” off of her debut. She was moving all over her piano bench and had this beautiful and captivating voice, I was 16 at the time and just loved the whole performance. The first time I would get to see her live would be a few years later. My aunt and I traveled from West Virginia to Charlotte, NC to see Tori Amos along with Alanis Morrissette. We were piled way up on the lawn for the show and decked out in our full 90’s era maxi dresses. When the summer rain came down during the show, we danced, and sang along, and loved every single minute of it. It was honestly one of our best memories together and we still talk about it.
Needless to say, I was pretty excited to get the opportunity to photograph Tori Amos for the first time as well. Which also happened to be in Charlotte, NC last week on June 26th. She would hit up Oven’s Auditorium for her Ocean to Ocean Tour. Tori came out with just a solo spotlight on her and went straight into “A Sorta Fairytale” off of 2002’s Scarlet’s Walk. As the song continued the background lit up with stars and gold lights would stream through out the crowd and was glistening on the stage along with the music. Tori Amos would play almost a 2 hour set. Each song was a new performance in itself with beautiful lights cascading over the stage. While the seats were full that night, something I also noticed is there really wasn’t the usual sea of cellphones up in the air like you usually see at concerts nowadays. Instead, I saw a full crowd absolutely captivated by a beautiful performance. I think it says a lot when you can still capture an audience like this and it made for an absolutely magical night.
