Wynonna Judd recently wrapped up her “Back To Wy” Tour. Every night, she’d perform her debut and sophomore albums ‘Wynonna’ and ‘Tell Me Why.’ The tour began on October 26th in Indianapolis, IN and wrapped up on December 1st in Knoxville, TN. We were excited to catch this incredible tour live when it rolled into DPAC in Durham, NC back on November 30th.
When Wynonna stepped on stage, everyone was on their feet and clapping as she started straight into “What It Takes”, the first track off of Wynonna. She would perform her entire debut album beginning to end before the curtains would close. While we were expecting it must be time for an intermission, Wynonna actually stepped back out with her band to play a short acoustic set. They would play several hits by The Judds, including “Mama He’s Crazy” and “Grandpa” before stepping off stage again.
When the band came out after only a short 20-minute intermission, Wynonna started into the title track off of her sophomore album Tell Me Why. The backdrop on the stage had changed to display artwork for this album as she played all of the tracks. The crowd continued anticipating knowing which song was next and would be chanting when it was time for their favorites.
Wynonna did stop quite a few times during the show just to chat with the audience. She would tell stories about writing certain tracks and also told a lot of stories about touring with her mom in The Judds. And she would stop just to talk to people. Wynonna at one point noticed a fan in the audience face timing someone. She stopped to say “Is that your mama you’re facetiming?” and continued also singing and talking this audience member’s mom. This was a full crowd and Wynonna made sure every person felt like they were not only a part of the show, but appreciated.
I’d actually only seen Wynonna once myself before this night. I was only 7 yrs old at the time when The Judds came to my small town in West Virginia and played a show. When I asked my mom about it later, she told me it was the week that “Mama He’s Crazy” hit #1 and they had a celebration on stage for it. I didn’t remember that part, but I always remembered the performance. It always stuck out to me as a great performance. I don’t even remember much that happened the rest of the day, but I do always remember that performance. And Wynonna still has a way of doing that, making every show memorable.
