With their seventh LP out, Dayseeker bring bare emotions to the surface while giving a gentle heaviness to their sound and lyrics. Creature in The Black Night is the echoes of the depressions and let downs that are fueled by the sounds that the band is known for. Dayseeker keeps their familiar tones and riffs with the electric synths followed by the soft but yet powerful voice of Rory Rodriguez. While this band is very metalcore they carry the hint of pop sound that gives them the very sound that makes them unique.
This album could be described almost like a letter to a narcissist or something along the lines of confronting the thing that brought on emotional traumas. Music can be open to interpretation of course, but each song on this album is like a different aspect of dealing with a toxic, self centered individual the problems they’ve caused. All the way from being in the thick of it to finding calm in being dead on the inside. Though its titles center mostly on a death theme, the sounds are very much alive. I have a lot of favorites on here but I’ll talk about the top three.
Starting out with “Creatures in the Black Night” is very heavy on the synths with an attractive beat, and a sexual undertone. This song seems like it speaks about an individual who masks who they are in everyday life by using charm and wit, going by the the lyrics, “so why are you lucid in the daylight, you feel like a stranger inside your skin. You run like a creature in the black night and you’ll be alone in your bed until the bitter end” with the second half of the lyrics referring to night time being a metaphor for the toxic person creating darkness around them and ultimately ending up alone. “Soulburn” is possibly its continuation, mostly because it talks of wanting to see the demise of someone that created emotionally destruction for another. The song creates a sort of anticipation of being able to watch the downfall of the ‘parasite’ by using a faster, lighter synthesizer beat that builds to the excitement of the lyrics “I’d love to see your soul burn alive”, waiting for the one to be exposed for the unforgivable betrayal they have created. This leads us to the next song, “The Living Dead.” Embracing trauma for what it is and trying to come back to your emotions, but being content with being dead inside because they’ve been through the worst and know they’ll eventually come back to themselves.
I like to save the best for last. I’d put “Crawl Back to My Coffin” as my number one pick for the album. This song represents finally coming back to yourself being at peace and accepting what comes after enduring the many emotional challenges, only to be called out again by the same toxicity, much like a cycle that doesn’t break. It’s like facing the problem face to face and wanting to break free from it for good, “Can I just be alone? A few more decades please”.
This LP lyrically has a great play on metaphors and words. That’s the great thing about music, it’s all open to interpretation but it makes sense when the listener can naturally relate. Dayseeker has a pop/electric, but still metal core sound that sticks out from the rest and for that reason this is more than likely going to top charts soon if it hasn’t already. Out of the many albums that I’ve listened to this year, this is very high on my list. The thing with Dayseeker is that you know what to expect but they always bring something new. The songs speak for themselves therefore the album really pulls itself together, this album is magic.
